Plans to start consultation on proposals to demolish a derelict pavilion – as well as providing a new base for a town playgroup – have been given the amber light by councillors.

The plans could see Hadleigh’s former pavilion, which is currently derelict after a major fire, demolished and the identification of a site for a new, purpose-built building to provide Hadleigh Community Playgroup with premises.

Members of Babergh’s Strategy Committee, which met yesterday (Thursday 15th January) gave the thumbs up in principle to the proposed revamp of the Babergh-owned land in Hadleigh, off Meadows Way and Calais Street.

Plans will now be developed by the Council’s Housing Panel, who will seeking local resident's view on possible new layout designs for the site.

Sue Wigglesworth, Chairman of Babergh’s Housing Panel said: “Getting rid of the old Pavilion provides us with an opportunity to redesign the layout of the Recreation ground. We need to find the best place for the Playgroup building and it would be good if we could improve the area at the same time as funding becomes available. We will be asking local residents for their ideas about how the recreation ground could be improved."

Rachel Cole, Chairman of Hadleigh Community Playgroup, said: “We are another step closer to getting a permanent home and this is really good news for the families of Hadleigh who use our facilities".

Further detailed information on funding – as well as more detailed plans of the proposed revamp – will be available in a later report to Babergh’s Strategy Committee.

The Housing Panel has now been tasked with consulting on a new layout for the recreation ground, identifying where the new playgroup building would be sited and provide several different design options, each with different price tags.
