A pilot project which saw free football coaching sessions in Sudbury was such a success that it is back for a second season!

Keen footballers of all ages are being encouraged to enjoy an hour-long free football coaching session at Sudbury Upper School Sports Centre on April 23rd, from 7pm until 8pm.

The Friday Night Street Football project was the result of a successful partnership project working between Babergh District Councils Be Active Service and Babergh’s Community Safety Partnership.

The aim of the project is to give local young people from the neighbouring estate something positive to do on a Friday evening. The project looks to scout potential coaches from these sessions and offer free training and qualifications for talented young volunteers.

Last season, the sessions attracted four key volunteers who have invested their time in the project and are keen to help out the young people in their local communities.

Head coach Rob Benson said: “These sessions are a chance for local youngsters to come down on a Friday night, learn some new skills and enjoy a game of football at the end.

“The sessions are open to all ages and abilities so if you’re looking for something to do on a Friday night come along and have a go.”

And Stephanie Lloyd, Babergh’s Community Development Officer (Leisure), added: “This second season of the street football will be even better as we look to build on last year’s foundations.

“We are also hoping to be able to fix matches for the youngsters with similar community projects around the area.”

The football project is part of the new Friday night youth ‘Hub’ which also runs every Friday, during term time, from 7pm until 9 pm at Sudbury Upper School Sports and Arts Centre.

The Hub provides a place for young people to meet friends, play pool and computer games or take part in something more active like Street dance or free running. The Hub is free of charge and is for ages 13-17. All youngsters that attend the first football session can claim a free soft drink from The Hub bar afterwards.
