Sproughton residents can be very proud of the village they live in – after it scooped Babergh’s Village of the Year’s top spot.
Entrants to Babergh District Council’s competition were told the results this week – with Sproughton in first, Lavenham in second and Glemsford in third place.
The winner of this round receives the Cosford Trophy, comprising a brass plaque, framed certificate and £500 towards a community project.
District finalists are then entered into the semi-final round, with winners then reaching the final stage with the overall winner receiving £1,000, a plaque, a certificate and becoming Suffolk Village of the Year.
The 2010 awards were open to any Suffolk village with an electoral roll population of between 501 and 3,000 residents.
Karina Coghlin, Babergh’s Tourism and Arts Manager, said: “Babergh is delighted to announce Sproughton’s success in this round of the competition.
“It was a really close contest and left the judges with a very hard decision but this village is a prime example of a community-minded village, that is well looked after and takes pride in itself.
“Sproughton thoroughly deserves the district accolade and now its fingers crossed for the county round!”
In 2009, the winning village of the district round was Newton who progressed to being the winner of the County round and became the Suffolk Village of the Year for 2009.
Babergh’s judging panel was made up of three district councillors who will be marked villages on their community spirit, general appearance, how well its parish council is run and its natural environment. ENDS
