A sod-turning ceremony will be taking place at 2pm next Monday, 19PthP July to mark the start of the Poplar Road regeneration scheme.

Cllr David Wood, Babergh District Council’s newly appointed Chairman is guest of honour.  Helping to celebrate this special occasion will be councillors and school children from the neighbouring Pot Kiln Primary School.  The event will conclude with a reception at the school where activities have been organised for the children.

Contractor Lovell Partnerships Ltd expect to complete the first phase of the scheme by the summer of 2011.  The scheme will comprise 44 new homes for local people and will be a mix of flats and houses for social rent and intermediate rent. There will also be six new shops.

The £5 million development received £1.6 million funding from the government’s Homes and Communities Agency and the donation of land from Babergh District Council.

Cllr Sue Wigglesworth, Chairman of Babergh's Housing Panel, said: "I am delighted this very important and much-needed development for Great Cornard is getting off the ground.

"We know communities and people across Babergh need, and want, affordable homes and this development will give them that and also revitalise this estate. We owe a great deal to the close working between all our partners to finally make this vision a reality."

And Ian Tippett, Babergh's Strategic Housing and Economic Development Manager, added: "To see the first piece of ground being turned over in preparation for this affordable housing development will be brilliant - and Babergh is pleased this project has come to fruition.

"Babergh has pledged to provide quality local homes that local people can afford - and this development of a very run-down area of Great Cornard will breathe new life into the community as well as delivering on that pledge.

“It has only been made possible through partnerships with the local people, parish council, Flagship and its contractors, and is a true example of what can be achieved when we all work together. I look forward to seeing the first families through the doors!"

Doug Malins, Flagship’s Head of Business Development said, “We are delighted that this regeneration project is now a reality.  In addition to the provision of new homes, redeveloping local shops and services as a hub for Poplar Road is crucial for a sustainable community to thrive.”
