MORE AFFORDABLE HOMES ON THE WAY FOR BABERGH

Summary

Fifteen affordable homes are just about to be built in three Babergh communities.
Fifteen affordable homes are just about to be built in three Babergh communities.

The new developments are part of Babergh’s priority to build more quality homes that local people can afford.

After securing planning permission Babergh, its partner Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) and contractors are about to start on all of the sites by the end of this month.

The first scheme at Wattisham Road, Bildeston, is a result of a review of Babergh’s property carried out in 2008. Then it was recognised that 45-51 Wattisham Road, had potential to be redeveloped, and that the four existing properties could be replaced with eight.

Negotiations with the tenants of the properties resulted in their agreement to be rehoused, and the site has now been transferred to Orwell Housing Association.

The site will provide a range of house types for affordable rent and includes a wheelchair standard bungalow which is being purpose built to meet the needs of a local family.

The Affordable Housing Team has worked in close partnership with Orwell Housing Association and Bildeston Parish Council on this scheme. Homes and Communities Agency funding of £387,532 has also been secured for the project.

Erwarton village identified a small housing need in its community when a survey was carried out. As a result, two homes for affordable rent for local people are to be built on Babergh-owned land next Boleyn Place.

The scheme is a result of a close partnership between Babergh, Erwarton Parish Council Suffolk ACRE and Iceni Homes

Planning permission was granted in June this year, and Homes and Communities Agency funding of £118,000 has been secured.

Due to the area having archaeological importance, a site assessment was necessary which has resulted in a full excavation of the site being recently completed. A start on site will be made by the end of June.

In Wiston Road, Nayland, an affordable housing scheme will result in five homes for affordable rent for local people.

The scheme is a result of a close partnership between Babergh, Nayland-with-Wiston Parish Council, Suffolk ACRE and Flagship Housing Group.

Planning Permission was granted in May this year, and Homes and Communities Agency funding of £250,000 has been secured. Work has already started on site.

Ian Tippett, Babergh’s Strategic Housing and Economic Development Manager, said: “All of these developments are bringing affordable, quality homes into communities that desperately need them.”

And Wendy Evans-Hendrick, Director of Development and Property Services for Orwell Housing , commented: “We are delighted to be working with Babergh District Council in providing much-needed, high-quality accommodation for the people of Bildeston.”
