Babergh District Council is working with the New Wolsey Theatre, for the sixth year, running and The Quay Theatre, for its second year, to give four students an opportunity to become theatre critics.

Jess Counsell and Bronte Nicoll are year 10 students at Holbrook High School and are studying Drama and English courses.  Both students have a keen interest in drama and theatre and see this as an opportunity to learn about deadlines and develop their critique writing skills.

Their first review will be - If That’s All There Is – inspired by the Peggy Lee song, this is the latest show from Inspector Sands – a young company with a big talent who are recent winners of the Edinburgh Film Festival. If That’s All There Is runs from 14th-18th  September. For more information please call the theatre’s Box Office on 01473 295900 or visit http://www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/

Claire Treadwell, Head of Communications at The New Wolsey Theatre, said: “We’re delighted to work with Babergh District Council again to deliver the Young Theatre Critics project.

“The scheme provides students with the unique opportunity to become reviewers for the year with the support and guidance of a professional industry reviewer.

“It has also proved invaluable in developing the skills and confidence of the students whilst helping to raise the profile of the New Wolsey’s programme to a younger audience.”

Nathan Kelly and Sadie Belsey are both studying drama and theatre at Great Cornard Upper School. Nathan’s aim is to promote drama and theatre to boys.

Their first review was Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest on 1st September. This production runs from 1st-4th September at The Quay Theatre. For more information please call the Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or visit the Quay Theatre website http://www.quaytheatre.org.uk/

Robert Benton, Director of The Quay Theatre, added: “We thoroughly enjoyed this enterprising scheme last year and are looking forward to working with Babergh.

“The considered views of the young reviewers are always worth a read, which is why the continued involvement with the local press, making them available to everyone, is such a benefit.”
And Jill Barton, Babergh District Council's Community Development Officer, added: “All our student critics are really committed and I am looking forward to reading some great reviews.

“Both The New Wolsey and The Quay are again staging some fabulous productions this autumn and our students are in for a real treat.

“This is another example of Babergh working in partnership with theatres and it is great to be able to give young people from our district this fantastic opportunity to review a range of exciting productions.” ENDS
