The planning system enables the provision of homes and buildings, investment and jobs in a way which is consistent with the principles of sustainable development. It needs to be positive in promoting competitiveness while protecting the environment and amenity. It provides society with a way of controlling the use and development of land.

There are seven main areas of information within the Planning and Building control pages:

See Planning applications

On the Search the planning and appeals register and view planning applications pages you can search and view details of current and historic planning applications. You can monitor the progress of current applications, submit comments about them and search a constantly updated list of applications received and decided each week. Please note that we are currently testing planning search pages and some functionality may not be available.

Planning application forms

You can download the forms on the planning application forms page. We also have a planning advice section to help you determine whether you need planning permission.

Planning information

On the planning information pages you can find information and advice about development control. Development control is the process by which planning applications are considered and decided against the background of the Development Plan and other material considerations.

Development Committee (the committe that discusses planning applications) meet on Wednesdays on a 4 weekly cycle. All meetings are held at the Council offices in Hadleigh (where we are) and start at 9.30 am. See Development Committee for details of agendas and minutes of meetings.

Planning enforcement

Planning enforcement resolves issues arising from not obtaining the relevant planning permission for development work or by not complying with the conditions set out within the planning application decision.

Planning policy

Planning Policy is the general term used where the future development of the Babergh District is involved. The District Council produces a Local Plan, and this, together with the Regional Spatial Strategy known as the East of England Plan, Saved Policies of the Suffolk Structure Plan, the Suffolk Minerals Local Plan , Suffolk Minerals Core Strategy and the Suffolk Waste Local Plan form the Development Plan for the Babergh District.

All planning decisions have to be made in accordance with the Development Plan, unless other material considerations indicate otherwise. The Local Development Framework will replace the Local Plan, and comes from Government guidelines to update planning in the United Kingdom.

Building Control

Building Control ensure that all new buildings comply with the Building Regulations, which seek to ensure their structural integrity, fire resistance, thermal insulation, etc. Building regulations also need to be adhered to for some building work on existing properties.

The Building Control pages have include information about the Building regulation process, including application forms, leaflets and advice.

Conservation
