Statement of Community Involvement (SCI)

Summary

The Statement of Community Involvement explains how Babergh District Council intends to engage the community in future planning matters affecting the Babergh District.

The SCI is one of several compulsory documents that makes up the LDF for the Babergh district. It is different from other documents as it is only deals with community involvement in the planning process and not with specific planning matters or proposals. It makes clear how communities can be involved in planning policy formulation, who will be involved and when. This also covers community involvement in the planning application process. The SCI is an important document within the LDF. It can be used as a reference point to ensure that as each plan document is prepared and as each planning application is determined, the Council follows its agreed procedures and practices for community involvement. The Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations 2004 prescribed in detail how the SCI was to be produced.

The views of the community are important and the Council will encourage their active involvement in the planning process. Its practice has been to exceed the minimum standards prescribed for consulting the local community on planning matters.

The Babergh SCI was submitted to the Secretary of State in May 2006 and was adopted by the Council on 19th December 2006, following a number of consultation stages. The final document has been produced following receipt of the report in October 2006, made by an independent examiner appointed by the Secretary of State. This report is binding on the Council, which means any recommended changes had to be made.

The adopted SCI can be downloaded from the link below, as can the Inspector's Report and the Formal Adoption Statement.
